Daylight at 5am: an Australian summer with a toddler

Summer light arrives before six. A dark room, a wake-time clock and a bedtime that moves with the season are the three tools.

Portable blackout curtain on a bedroom window

The short answer: darken the room first, give them a clock that shows when it's morning, and let bedtime drift fifteen minutes later in summer. Fighting the sun with willpower alone does not work.

Why summer breaks sleep

Across most of Australia the sun is up before six in summer, and in the eastern states with daylight saving it can be light well before five. A toddler's body clock takes that light as a wake-up signal. Nothing is wrong with them. The room is just bright.

Step one: darkness

Blinds that looked fine in winter leak light in summer. A portable blackout curtain fits any window with suction cups, packs flat, and comes with you to grandparents' houses and holiday rentals. This is the cheapest, fastest fix and the one to try first.

Step two: a visible rule

Once the room is dark, a toddler still has no idea whether it is morning. A sleep trainer clock like Sam the Lamb or Davy the Dog closes its eyes at bedtime and opens them at the time you set. Red means stay in bed, green means okay to get up. In the last thirty minutes, twelve stars count down so they can watch the wait shrink.

Step three: move bedtime with the season

A 7pm bedtime in bright daylight is a hard sell. Let it drift to 7:15 or 7:30 in summer. Fifteen minutes at a time, and hold each step for a few days.

Naps and daylight

The same darkness helps the afternoon nap. For naps on the go, the Rest Nest sleep pod makes a pram or portacot dark and quiet anywhere.

Daylight saving

When the clocks change, shift the wake-up time on the clock by fifteen minutes a day over four days rather than an hour at once.
